The short answer. Google builds AI Overviews mainly from pages that already rank well for the search and answer the question clearly. To be cited, fix technical problems, answer questions in the first few lines of the right page, use structured data, and build authority through links and coverage.
What AI Overviews are
AI Overviews are the AI-written summaries Google shows above the normal results for many searches, with links to the sources it used. AI Mode goes further, answering in a chat-style conversation. Google says AI Overviews reach more than 2 billion people a month, and that AI Mode passed 1 billion monthly users in 2026.
What they do to clicks
When an AI Overview appears, people click results less. Pew Research Center found people clicked a result in 8% of visits with an AI summary, against 15% without. Ahrefs found the top-ranking page got a 34.5% lower click-through rate when an AI Overview was present. Being one of the cited sources is how you claw some of that back.
How Google chooses sources
Google hasn't published a formula, but the pattern is clear from tracking: cited pages usually rank on the first page for the search or a closely related one, answer the question directly, and come from sites with a track record on the topic.
How to get cited
- Fix the technical basics. Pages that can't be crawled or indexed can't be cited.
- Answer first. Put a clear one or two sentence answer near the top, then the detail.
- Cover the follow-up questions. AI Overviews often answer several related questions at once. A page that covers them is more useful to quote.
- Use structure. Headings that match the questions, lists, steps and tables.
- Add structured data for your business, products, services and FAQs.
- Build authority. Links and mentions from relevant, trusted sites still matter.
- Keep it current. Update prices, dates and facts so the page stays trustworthy.
How to measure it
Search Console counts clicks and impressions from AI Overviews within your normal web search figures, without a separate filter. To see whether you're cited, track a set of target searches, note which show an AI Overview and check who's cited each month.
